Overview

Vanguard is the world’s second-largest asset manager and a pioneer of low-cost index fund investing. Their UK investor platform offers a simple, focused service — but you can only invest in Vanguard’s own funds and ETFs.

The platform fee of 0.15%, capped at £375/year, is among the lowest percentage-based charges available — but a £4/month (£48/yr) minimum fee applies below £32,000, which is higher than InvestEngine’s zero fee at that size. There’s no dealing charge either way. Vanguard is FSCS-protected up to £85,000, the standard level for any FCA-regulated UK platform.

Is the Vanguard ISA flexible?

No. Vanguard’s Stocks & Shares ISA is not a flexible ISA — if you withdraw money, that withdrawal permanently uses up part of your annual £20,000 allowance, even if you put the money back in the same tax year. If flexibility matters to you, Trading 212 offers a flexible ISA with zero platform fee.

Transferring an ISA to or from Vanguard

Vanguard accepts ISA transfers in from other providers, and you can transfer out if you switch. Transfers don’t use up your annual allowance and don’t trigger a tax event, provided you use the official ISA transfer process rather than withdrawing and re-depositing — see our multiple ISAs guide for how transfers work. Always check current transfer terms directly with Vanguard (and your losing/receiving provider) before initiating, as processing times and any exit charges from your old provider can vary.

Vanguard Junior ISA

Vanguard offers a Junior Stocks & Shares ISA (JISA) at the same 0.15% fee, capped at £375/year — but the £48/yr minimum fee that applies to adult accounts under £32,000 does not apply to the Junior ISA, making it genuinely cheap for the smaller balances typical of a child’s account. As with the adult ISA, you’re restricted to Vanguard’s own fund and ETF range, and there’s no dealing charge.

The Vanguard approach

Vanguard’s philosophy is simple: minimise costs, invest in broadly diversified index funds, stay the course. The platform reflects this — there’s no research into individual shares, no ability to buy other providers’ funds. It’s a focused tool for a focused strategy.

Verdict

For simple, low-cost passive investing in Vanguard funds, this is an excellent choice. The restriction to Vanguard’s range is the key limitation. Use our calculator to compare against other platforms at your portfolio size.
